“Never a dull bite.” That’s the motto and lifestyle of Virginia hot sauce company SoSS. Since 2019, SoSS has been making vibrant, unique sauces featuring seasonal VA produce. Owner and SoSS Boss™ Tommy Terrell had an existing brand mark in place from the company’s early days, but wanted something fresh to match the personality that he’s cultivated for this brand. We designed a new logotype and visual identity that are tangy and funky enough to compliment these condiments.
Brian and Valerie have a rare partnership. Their respective skill sets complement each other beautifully, resulting in cohesive, sophisticated branding and design. They’re easy-going and jovial, but thoughtful and focused when it comes to delivering work that satisfies not only their clients’ needs, but their own high standards. Let them make work they are proud of and you will find them exceeding whatever expectations you may have had.

The logo
We explored a few directions for the brand mark, ultimately landing on something equal parts angular, and curvy. The logotype is based on Zoo from Blaze Type with a few changes: tweaked proportions, softened corners, and a slight arch made to fully customize the mark for the SoSS brand.
Typography
The type for SoSS needed to echo the brand’s unique personality while maintaining legibility. We utilized the warm and goofy VC Henrietta for display type, with Swear Display as a secondary display font. Alternating between the two creates a playful contrast we find in the sauces; the sturdy but vibrant base of Swear gives way to the playful spice of Henrietta. Body copy and small type is set in Degular Text.
Colors
SoSS’ color palette revolves around their three flagship flavors: Green, Orange, and Purple. Lighter and darker tones compliment each primary color for a simple and effective palette.
Labels & Illustrations
We designed labels for SoSS’ three flagship flavors and expanded the visual identity to include custom illustrations and patterns. The illustrations used on the labels feature each flavors’ main ingredients. To create consistency in the brand’s visual language, we utilized shapes from the logotype letterforms in the development of the slightly abstracted illustrated style.
